“[…] Chartier’s pieces always cleverly alternate between dramatic scenes and breathtaking explosions of dance, serving to intensify individual movements or emotions. Thus while the old folks watch staff members clean a ceiling lamp with giant brooms, in Leo’s imagination, the carers turn into whirling, threatening dervishes in white. There are comedic moments when Leo pursues a lady in a wheelchair. There are thrilling moments when the home’s director turns out to be a patient with aggressive tendencies […] Chartier again and again finds the right movements to express the psychological situation. Everything is focused in the performance of a soul singer on the old people’s home stage, who ages to become a hunched old woman over the course of her song. It is inherent in everyone. What a moving piece. […]”

preview TEXT

Every ending is a new beginning. True to this motto, the Belgian artists collective Peeping Tom has set the first part of their new family trilogy in a home for the elderly. The father – provider, role model and authority figure – takes centre stage. Now at an advanced age, in the setting of life’s last theatre, he reveals some unexpected sides to his personality. In sterling Peeping Tom style, combining dance, drama and song, the seven performers tell astounding stories, veering between tragedy and comedy, as compelling as they are moving. Directed by choreographer duo Gabriela Carrizo and Franck Chartier, Peeping Tom performances defy the laws of time and space and take audiences on a date with their unconscious. “Vader” is another spectacular show employing an ingenious stage set and unconventional narrative methods; a feature-length night at the theatre that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
