The Falling Stardust

Compagnie Amala Dianor (FR)

Press

“[…] A glance like a sunrise: For a short moment the two dancers smile at each other. […] The entire space seems flooded with intimacy, empathy, security and calm. Then they take a second look and their smiles vanish. Cautiously, they approach each other. The closer they get, the tighter their muscles tense: Instead of the anticipated embrace there is fighting. […] Again and again, the seven female dancers and two male dancers run up against the limits of communication, preventing them from merging into couples or a group. The brief flickers of hope only make it more obvious: Togetherness is a utopia here.”

When nine dancers from the worlds of ballet, hip hop and contemporary dance set off together for new dance galaxies, they’re bound to raise plenty of stardust. Their guide in this energy-laden piece is the Franco-Senegalese choreographer Amala Dianor, who consistently combines supposedly conflicting techniques and transfers them on to new dance contexts. Having grown up with hip hop, Dianor went on to explore contemporary and African dance, set up his own company in Angers and take residencies in renowned theatres. His latest creation “The Falling Stardust” takes classical movement sequences as the starting point for a choreographic expedition that is inspired not only by the dancers’ individual strengths but also their insecurities. Their combined stardust falls on to the delicately wrought soundscape created by Awir Leon and makes it shine.
