“[…] An entire cornucopia of ideas, often discomforting ones, is poured out within a little over an hour. […] The performers’ dancing causes concern for their joints – one of Peeping Tom’s trademarks is their extreme contortions […]. But why shouldn’t you do a spontaneous flying somersault now and then, like Maria Carolina Vieira does – with a baby in her arms. Meanwhile, her co-performer Marie Gyselbrecht, crooning ‘I’m a fool to want you’, emerges from the coffee machine, which the latter does not survive. This inspires Simon Versnel to give a funerary speech: in honour of his mother, two wives, and now this beloved machine. The piece is terribly comical and, above all, terrifically intense, with some unforgettable scenes that are now permanently etched on our memories. […]”

preview TEXT
Over the years, festival favourites Peeping Tom, founded in 2000 and led by choreographer duo Gabriela Carrizo and Franck Chartier, have grown together to become like a family. It’s only natural, then, that the current trilogy by the Belgian ensemble is dedicated to precisely that subject: Following on from “Vader” (Father) under Chartier’s aegis – shown at the festival in 2015 – they now present “Moeder” (Mother), directed by Carrizo. For this piece, Carrizo sounded out the barely expressed nuances of the emotionally charged mother-child relationship and brought them to the stage in the form of virtuoso dance, drama, song and sound. The eight performers give their all in a succession of surreal scenes, featuring melancholy alongside slapstick as the best of stage-fellows in a range of settings, from a delivery room to a morgue, all unified by the extraordinary stage set. Both unsettling and intimate, “Moeder” is a thrilling piece that is bound to leave the audience eagerly anticipating the third and final part, “Child”.
